Hydrogen for Lift Trucks, Drayage and Material Handling

Hydrogen for the Heavy Lifting

Decarbonization at Different Locations

Throughout warehouses, at manufacturing sites, in exhibit halls and other facilities that have material handling needs, decarbonizing the fuel sources with hydrogen continues to expand. Fuel cells using compressed hydrogen as fuel produce no carbon emissions and provide cleaner indoor atmospheres where they are used compared to diesel or propane powered lift trucks.

The compressed hydrogen gas refueling of the lift can be localized to the warehouse. With the refilling station centralized near the facility, the lift vehicles can spoke out from the central source and return for refilling. The advantage of refueling with hydrogen is that it is much faster than recharging batteries.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells at BMW

By using hydrogen fueling system for BMW's material handling fleet, hydrogen is now doing the heavy lifting. BMW’s manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, replaced lead-acid batteries in its material handling fleet with hydrogen fuel cells. The forklifts and trucks service the plant's production and logistics functions by delivering process parts to assembly machines throughout the plant. Linde supplied a hydrogen fueling system with six indoor dispenser stations to support more than 100 pieces of material handling equipment operating inside BMW's plant, including two new higher-throughput compressors, new storage tubes and distribution piping, and eight new hydrogen dispensers. The green hydrogen used in the fuel cells is a by-product of a sodium chlorate plant that Linde purifies, compresses and liquefies using electricity produced from renewable hydropower.
